In this lecture dated November 2, 1860, Minor discussed the liabilities of those who rent out enslaved persons and offered a number of examples of injuries and harms to enslaved persons that required payment of damages to those who held people in bondage.

 

Excerpt

“Liabilities of hires of slave besides that to return him. If accident happen to slave such as mayhem or other injury. General rule is whenever bailee of chattel [?] it from purposes for which it was bailed, he is liable for all the consequences whether he could have prevented it or not. [...] Negro boy hired to work on farm, hirer had been in habit of taking trips on boat down river, insisted on taking the boy and the boy drowned, bailee had to pay the value of negro.” (p. 321)
